Michalis Fountoulakis

Dr. Michalis Fountoulakis is an Associate Professor in the University of the Aegean School of Environment. He graduated from the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Patras in 2001. Subsequently, he pursued a doctorate in Biochemical Engineering and Environmental Technology, earning his Ph.D. from the same department in 2005.

His main research interests focus on developing biochemical processes for treating and utilizing liquid and solid waste (anaerobic digestion, non-conventional liquid waste treatment systems, composting, cultivation of microalgae, and fungal growth). He served as a Visiting Professor in 2022 at the University of Ghent and the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology. He has published 63 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, with over 2,400 citations and an h-index of 26 (Scopus).

He has participated in implementing more than 30 funded national and European programs (ESPA, H.F.R.I., LIFE, INTERREG, and HORIZON, among others). Mr. Fountoulakis is the project's scientific coordinator and will oversee its implementation.
